One sampler handles two crudes at once

A Jiskoot product story

The task of simultaneously measuring online density of two crude oils has been answered with the specification of a Jiskoot fast-loop sampling and density analysis system.

The task of extracting samples for analysis and simultaneously measuring online density of two crude oils with very different viscosities at the NIGG Oil Terminal was answered with the specification of a Jiskoot fast-loop sampling and density analysis system using a Byscoop and pneumatically actuated Jiskoot 210 flow-through (cell) sample extractor.

Handled by Talisman Energy, the system will measure the 163cst Captain crude oil imported/exported from tankers and the 11cst Beatrice crude oil imported through the Cromarty Firth pipeline.

The high pour point of the Beatrice crude meant that a heated cabinet maintaining a temperature of 37C was required to avoid waxing.

Connections were also needed for system flushing to minimise sample crosscontamination and ensure that the Beatrice crude was cleared from the system on completion to avoid it solidifying and blocking the pipes and lines.

The Jiskoot Byscoop used to extract the bypass fast loop features a unique Swans neck designed to eliminate bluff body effects to guarantee extremely high sample representivity across a range of process fluids.

Representivity is crucial when taking samples and measuring the density of wet oil as an incorrect measurement can bias taxation or allocation measurements.

The flow proportionally controlled 210P cell sampler's unique positive displacement action provides representative batch samples irrespective of variations in flow rate, pressure or fluid viscosity.

Unlike a probe sampler, the entire stream passes through the body of the device.

A bottom exit sample outlet eliminates water separation and reduces any dead volume within the sampler to insignificance avoiding any batch contamination or sample bias.

Designed for reliable operation as part of an externally pumped bypass fast-loop sampling system, the 210 can be used with 1 to 2in diameter line and the system is designed to allow online maintenance and replacement of seals to be performed without removing the sampler from the fast loop.
