Two oil tankers fitted with the JLMD system are to be launched - one in South Korea in September and a second one in Tahiti in October 2004.

By the end of 2004, four merchant ships equipped with the JLMD system, developed by JLMD Ecologic Group of France, will be sailing in international waters.

The company, which has patented and specialises in pre-installed, fast oil-recovery technology for use in the event of a shipwreck, revealing that another 30 ships are awaiting the installation of its JLMD systems.

On 15 September, 2004, in the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) Shipyard, on Koje Island (Geoje), in South Korea, Italian shipowner Navigazione Montanari (TAMOIL) will hold an official naming ceremony for the Valtamed, the first oil tanker equipped with the JLMD system.

The second naming involving a JLMD-fitted merchant ship will be held in mid-October 2004 in Tahiti (in French Polynesia) by French shipowner SOCATRA; two additional tankers are currently under construction.

Approximately 30 more ships are waiting to be fitted with JLMD systems; in addition, about 50 ships - primarily operated by Asian shipping agents - currently have orders pending.

All of this illustrates the fact that the JLMD system dramatically reduces pollution resulting from damage to oil and chemical tankers, as well as large-capacity fuel tankers, which are also extremely polluting.

The figures recorded by JLMD, as part of its international expansion, are very promising - and the fact that hundreds of ships stand to be equipped with the technology over the next two years is good news for marine environmental protection across the board.

The French specialist company can rightly celebrate the installation of the first two JLMD systems, with the added prospect of an exponential increase in future orders.

This has been made possible thanks to the support of JLMD's top-tier partners and sponsors (Smit Salvage, Groupama transport, UK P and I Club, MTI Network, IFM, SNSM, and others).

JLMD is inviting journalists and other interested parties to attend the naming of the Valtamed, equipped with the JLMD system, on 15 September 2004 in the morning, at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) Shipyard, in Okpo Bay, on Koje Island (Geoje), in South Korea.

The following partners of the French company will be present:political figures representing South Korea and Monaco; shipowner Navigazione Montanari of Italy; TAMOIL's top management, together with communication staff members; Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering shipyard's management; the JLMD Ecologic Group team, including Jean-Luc Dabi, inventor of the JLMD system.

JLMD Ecologic Group is based in Nice, in south-eastern France.

Jean-Luc Dabi, president of the group, has invented and patented the JLMD system, which is claimed to enable a 70 to 90 per cent reduction in the pollution caused by shipwrecked oil tankers.

The JLMD system is currently the only pre-installed system that can recover fuel oil from the tanks of sunken ships.

The JLMD system can be installed on any kind of tanker, whether of recent or old construction, and either single- or double-hulled.

It works in all weather conditions, and no matter in what position the ship lies on the sea bed.

It enables immediate access to the tanks of a sunken ship and quick recovery of their contents.

Less than one week is sufficient, once the extraction hoses are connected.

Pre-installing the system on ships leads to quick and clean recovery in the event of a shipwreck.

There is no need to breach the hull, no need to immerse pumps, and no need for complex installations.

All explosion risks are eliminated.
