French shipowner Socatra has chosen the JLMD system for all ships in its new fleet in order to guarantee environmental protection and marine conservation.

Two additional ships are expected to be equipped with the system, which is already installed on the Nizon, chartered by Total.

The Kerlaz, which was named in Barcelona on 2 November, is awaiting finalisation of the installation, while the fitting of the system on the Kermaria is scheduled for late December 2004.

However, Socatra does not plan to stop there; the shipowner's goal is to fit the JLMD system on all its ships currently in operation.

JLMD Ecologic Group sets high standards for maritime safety and is working to ensure that government officials and organisations make the JLMD system a mandatory safety feature, using similar regulation to that which requires vessels to use the double-hull process.

JLMD Ecologic Group also mobilises its corporate partners to protect the environment.

Several French firms have now joined JLMD Ecologic Group in the fight against marine pollution.

By contributing their expertise, JLMD partners are helping to introduce new standards - Groupama Transport, Europe's second largest maritime insurer, will offer benefits to shipowners who wish to equip their fleets with the JLMD system.

By 2005, the JLMD system will be fitted on 30 ships, and nearly 50 oil tankers already have orders pending.

The JLMD system ensures the rapid recovery of cargo in the event of wreck or grounding.

The system may be used on any kind of tanker and works in all weather conditions.

The system's ease of installation makes it an essential tool in the fight against marine pollution.

With the support of the Institut Francais de la Mer (French Sea Institute), the Societe Nationale des Sauveteurs en Mer (French National Sea Rescue Society), the Armateurs de France (Shipowners of France) and BRS as well as international partners - including Tamoil, SMIT Salvage, MTI Network and UK P and I club - JLMD Ecologic Group has become a top-tier player in the maritime sector.
