Increased productivity in the production of polymer solutions can be achieved with the Vipa particle analysis system from Jorin.

Increased productivity in the production of polymer solutions can be achieved with the Vipa particle analysis system from Jorin By monitoring the solutions for contamination, the compact units give an immediate warning of problems with product quality

The innovative system uses a video microscope to capture online images of particles in the fluid flow.

These images are automatically analysed by powerful software, which generates continuous real-time profiles of any contaminants in the fluid.

"The capability of Vipa units to classify inclusions in fluids by analysing their size and shape has already been proven in the oil industry", commented Jorin Chairman John Roth.

"We are now offering the benefits of their advanced technology to the polymer industry".

The units can take into account up to 17 particle parameters, such as aspect ratio or shape factor.

As solid particles have a very different shape from liquid droplets for example, the Vipa can use this difference to provide comprehensive data on up to eight different contaminant types.

The only constraint is that the polymer solution needs to be transparent enough to produce a sufficiently clear video image.

A typical application is in the production of polymer membranes for biomedical and industrial uses.

Dirt, gas or undisolved gel in the liquid polymer can cause the thread to break as it leaves the spinneret, so using a Vipa unit to check for these can produce a significant increase in productivity.

Alarms can be set to trigger when any of the parameters monitored falls outside preset limits.

A video image of the particles is shown on screen, enabling operators to see immediate confirmation of any changes in particle concentration, size, type etc.
