Sensors monitor tyre pressure

A Kavlico product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 7, 2007

Kavlico's SmartSense sCAP3 MEMS-based sensors allow continuous monitoring of tyre pressure.

Kavlico, an operation of Schneider Electric and a global business unit of Custom Sensors and Technologies has released its SmartSense sCAP3 ultra-low power consumption Silicon MEMS based sensors that are ideal for tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS).

The sensor allows for continuous monitoring with up to a five times faster response.

As a result of extremely low power consumption, overall TPMS system cost can be reduced.

Battery cost is relative to size and a current draw of approximately 1/10th of industry standards decreases the size of the battery needed.

Accelerometer usage may not be required, and other component costs and potential failure modes are also reduced or eliminated.

Because output is digital, A/D conversion is not required.

This low-cost device is extremely small in size, with a chip that measures 1.2 x 1.5mm and a QFN package that measures 4 x 4mm.

It is available with an array of flexible mounting and packaging options.

The power consumption of only 20uA is compatible with both battery and battery-less applications.

The input voltage requirement is 2.2 to 5V DC and is compatible with wireless applications.

The sensors have an operating temperature range of - 40 to +125C.
