Pressure sensors optimise engine performance

A Kavlico product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 19, 2009

Kavlico has released two pressure sensors for the heavy duty truck and bus market sector that assist in optimising engine performance.

The air filter and oil filter restriction pressure sensors assist systems that monitor filter life and performance.

Good filter condition is important for engines to run cleanly and efficiently.

Precisely measuring and mixing the correct amounts of air and fuel is a critical element in modern internal combustion engines.

When an air filter or fuel filter becomes clogged, the ratio of air-to-fuel can be compromised.

When an air filter becomes obstructed, an engine can receive too much fuel in proportion to air, causing the engine to run 'rich'.

Running rich decreases efficiency and can release unburned hydrocarbons into the exhaust stream as a result of incomplete combustion.

The opposite is true when a fuel filter becomes clogged.

In this situation, an engine can be forced to run on too 'lean' a mixture.

This can decrease power and potentially cause engine damage.

To avoid these conditions, Kavlico air and fuel filter sensors can be used to help monitor filter life and performance.

This can help engines complete the combustion process more efficiently and cleanly.

Fuel filter restriction sensors often measure in the -10-0psig range while air filter restriction sensors can monitor even smaller pressure deltas such as -1.5-0psig.

Kavlico pressure sensors generally operate on 5VDC and provide a 0.5-4.5 linear amplified analogue output proportional to pressure.

They tolerate high vibration environments and have good stability, repeatability and hysteresis.

Depending upon the exact OEM specification criteria, a ceramic capacitive or piezo-resistive (PRT) sense element can be selected for end-use compatibility.

Process and electrical connector options are available to suit the installation requirements of the OEM.
