Windows-based acquisition replaces tape recorders

A Kenda Electronic Systems product story

The Ministry of Defence has installed a data collection and analysis unit developed by Southampton based Kenda Electronic Systems on its entire fleet of Type 22 frigates.

Following successful functional testing and sea trials, the Ministry of Defence has installed a data collection and analysis unit (DCAU) developed by Southampton based Kenda Electronic Systems on its entire fleet of Type 22 frigates.

The state-of-the-art DCAU has been designed as a replacement for the previous generation of magnetic tape recording systems used for engine monitoring purposes on board Type 22 frigates.

The DCAU will be linked to a variety of sensors associated with the ships' machinery control system to collect data on parameters such as temperature, shaft rotation speed, vibration and propeller pitch.

Using the latest microprocessor technology, the new 96-channel Windows NT based DCAU monitors these parameters with a sampling rate of up to 1Ksample/s and records the information on to hard disk for analysis by the DCAU's suite of Optimal software.

The MoD is expanding the upgrade programme to other ships in its fleet, and variations of the DCAU have already been installed on a number of Type 42 and CVS vessels.
