EMC backshell connects and terminates flexible PCB

KEC has developed a special EMC backshell that adapts a circular connector to a flexible printed circuit board while terminating the ground plane of the PCB to the shell of the connector

KEC, the EMC interconnect specialist, has developed a special EMC backshell that adapts a circular connector to a flexible printed circuit board while terminating the ground plane of the PCB to the shell of the connector.

The KA 0648 system was developed in conjunction with a major connector manufacturer for a European missile programme and was based on technology developed by KEC for Shorts Missile Systems and used on the Starstreak missile.

The system consists of a low profile metal body that houses the flexible PCB and fits over the rear of the connector allowing the contacts to be terminated.

The rear cap is then screwed into place totally enclosing the PCB.

Conductive seals housed in both the body and the rear cap ensure full screening and environmental sealing.

Although this product was designed for a specific task KEC managing director, Mr David Dyson, is sure that it will have a wider appeal: "We designed the KA 0648 as a special to solve a tricky screening problem in a demanding application where space was limited.

We developed a high quality solution within the budget and I am sure that this product will find use in other missile programmes and other applications where space is restricted and flexible PCBs have to be terminated.".
