Keithley to host MIMO channel sounding webinar

A Keithley Instruments product story

Keithley Instruments, a specialist in advanced electrical test instruments and systems, will broadcast a free webinar titled 'Understanding MIMO Channel Sounding' on 24 September 2009.

This one-hour web-based seminar will introduce the topic of multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) channel sounding as it relates to characterising a real-world MIMO wireless channel, which can be used in the radio-frequency (RF) testing of a device by applying channel emulation.

For the RF engineer, understanding the wireless channel has become an integral part of the design and development of wireless systems.

Traditional single-carrier systems have had to deal with multi-path fading and inter-symbol interference, while multi-carrier and MIMO systems have introduced techniques to minimise - or even benefit from - these effects.

The standards organisations have introduced a variety of channel models intended to represent real-world wireless channels and test equipment vendors have devised a range of solutions to simulate these channel models for the purposes of testing wireless devices.

However, these channel models only cover a small subset of all possible wireless channels.

To increase this coverage and provide the RF engineer with greater assurance that a particular design will work when deployed, channel sounding can be employed to characterise a real-world MIMO wireless channel.

This can then be used for testing a device using channel emulation.

This webinar will introduce the basic concepts of the wireless communication channel, MIMO channel sounding and channel emulation.

It will introduce a flexible and cost-effective RF test system that can be used for performing channel sounding, channel emulation and the functional testing of MIMO wireless devices.

The webinar is recommended for MIMO wireless system and radio designers, including hardware and algorithm developers and wireless communications researchers.

Presenter Jake Sanderson is an RF applications engineer for Keithley Instruments.

He supports MIMO applications in research and development and education, including the development of a MIMO channel sounding application.
