Kenton Research has developed a new switched 4-wire line-combiner/splitter unit (LCU) for use in analogue telecontrol or SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.

Kenton Research has developed a new switched 4-wire line-combiner/splitter unit (LCU) for use in analogue telecontrol or SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems The new MOD6951 is designed for telecontrol applications where one central control modem has to be connected to up to eight remote sites, each equipped with a 4-wire switched carrier modem

In operation, signals from the control modem pass through the unit and are sent to each remote site.

The response channel from a remote site is switched through to the control modem only when valid modem tones are detected and an interlock disables the other response channels.

An anti-streaming timer will lock out any response channel where the carrier is 'on' for longer than the pre-set period, thereby allowing the remaining channels to function correctly.

Robust modem tone-detection techniques provide fast, reliable switching with excellent immunity from spurious signals and noise.

The unit incorporates level adjustment on each output port.

Line amplification with selectable-amplitude high-frequency equalisation on the input ports allows the unit to be used with copper cables.

Powering is from an external DC supply (19-60 V DC, positive or negative earth) with built-in overvoltage and undervoltage protection.

Comprehensive alarm and status outputs are provided for connection to SCADA systems for remote monitoring and maintenance.

The unit is housed in a wall-mounted DIN standard IP66 enclosure which houses a Eurocard subrack with hinged cover in the upper section and a PCB backplane which extends down to the lower section.

Removing the cover on the lower section gives access to all the connectors needed for user wiring.

A power supply module and control card are fitted as standard in the Eurocard subrack.

Line cards are fitted as required, from five for a system with four remote ports up to nine for a system with eight remote ports.

Front panel LED indicators and test access sockets are provided to assist commissioning and maintenance.

An adaptor bracket is available to permit mounting in a standard 19-inch racking enclosure.

A mains power supply is also available, which may be fitted with standby batteries to provide 10-12 hours' operation under mains failure conditions.
