Kenton has designed an equipment solution for WRSL that enables the use of existing copper infrastructure to communicate to new and legacy trackside equipment in a challenging environment.

Kenton Research and Westinghouse are delivering new DSL technology to Network Rail.

The Home and Distant Communicator (HDC) provides multidrop communicates with trackside devices using Echelon/Lontalk and Ethernet , over dual-routed SHDSL transmission using existing copper infrastructure.

Robust communications over an existing copper infrastructure are achieved using two DSL ports per HDC and a ring topology with no time delay for failed routes.

The HDC can communicate up to 5km, depending on the cable quality and interference.

Any number of HDCs can be fitted to a network, provided there is sufficient bandwidth is available between them to route the required traffic demand.

The HDC can also be used as a regenerator for very long circuits but does require local 12V DC or mains HD power unit.

Each HDC has its own IP address and can be remotely managed for both faults and maintenance using TFTP, Telnet or web browser.

Each HDC hold its own even log with real-time clock for timed entries.

Kenton specialises in providing communications solutions that are focused on increasing the value of its customers' networks.

Kenton has designed an equipment solution for WRSL that enables the use of existing copper infrastructure to communicate to new Westinghouse and legacy trackside equipment in a challenging environment.

The technology is well suited to a number of industrial applications where robust communications is required over existing infrastructure to new and legacy systems.

John Larkin, Managing Director, said "Kenton are delighted to collaborate with Westinghouse in providing an upgrade path for Network Rail and help bring innovative technology into the transport sector".
