Azerbaijan oil field provides big business

A Krohne product story

Krohne has supplied over GBP 1 million of flow monitoring instrumentation for the AGC oil field project in Azerbaijan.

Krohne has supplied over GBP 1 million of flow monitoring instrumentation for the AGC oil field project in Azerbaijan, since it was selected as a preferred supplier for flow instrumentation by core contractor, Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) in 2002.

The flow and level instrumentation specialist company has delivered a wide variety of flow equipment including all-metal tube H250 variable area flowmeters, ultrasonic flowmeters and 4080K electromagnetic flowmeters for the first two phases of a major oil and gas project in the Caspian Sea off the coast of Baku, Azerbaijan.

The ACG field, operated by BP, supplies oil and gas for export, and is the largest currently under development in Azerbaijan.

Krohne supplied flow equipment for two new onshore oil production platforms (Central Azeri), a compression and water injection (CWP) platform, and two oil platforms (East and West Azeri), which are currently under fabrication at the oil field construction site near Baku.

It also provided ultrasonic flowmeters for the BTC (Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan) Pipeline Project, the world's longest pipeline being constructed to carry oil from the AGC oilfield, through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, to the Mediterranean.

Five ultrasonic flowmeters will measure the oil flow from each oil and gas platform to the terminal, and the flow measurements will be used by the pipeline leak detection system.

Krohne also supplied an additional range of flow equipment including pitot tubes, orifice plates, classic and wet gas venturi tubes, water cut meters, PD meters and flow computers for a variety of duties on site.

Krohne spokesman, Andy Muschamp says: "This project has been a particular challenge as no two applications at the field have been the same, so the meter specifications, such as flange size and rating, component materials and construction have been adapted to cater for each individual duty".

In addition to the cost saving benefits of specifying Krohne flowmeters, the company was chosen as a preferred supplier on the basis of its proven project management as well as its approach to document control.

Krohne has employed a dedicated document control manager and appointed a project manager internally to ensure smooth running and accuracy throughout the project.

Krohne has a proven reputation for excellence in the supply of flowmeter equipment for oil projects, having played a major role in the Caspian Pipeline project, Karachaganak Refinery and China's Liaohe Oil field.
