Krohne's H250 variable area flowmeters are providing a cost effective solution to processing rape seed oil at Thywissen Company, a specialist food manufacturer based in Germany Rape seed oil, which is used in the manufacture of many food products, is a particularly difficult substance to measure the flow rate of accurately

Its high viscosity and low conductivity mean that measurement technologies such as vortex meters and electromagnetic flowmeters are not capable of measuring it.

Thywissen also investigated using ultrasonic and Coriolis flow measurement instruments, which could be suitable for the application because they work independently of viscosity and conductivity.

However, the company decided that Krohne's H250 variable area flowmeter provided the best combination of value and measurement performance.

During processing the rape seed is first pressed to extract the oil.

The raw oil is then refined using phosphoric acid and caustic soda, which are used to remove phosphatides and free fatty acids.

The oil is then bleached with mineral earth that absorbs colourants.

Krohne's H250s are used in these processes to measure accurately the amount of mineral earth added to processing tanks during this operation, which are carried out both in batches as well continuously.

For the continuous bleaching process the H250 is fitted with an electronic signal convertor (ESK) which detects the flow rate of the electrical current.

The contact-free ESK uses two magnetic-field sensors to detect changes in the magnetic flux and fluctuations in the field-strength of the metal float and built-in magnet.

The 4-20mA signal output from the instrument is used to control dosing of the mineral earth.

In batch operation, the H250 displays readings of the flow rate and total quantity of mineral earth that is added to processing tanks, which can be displayed alternately if required.

Finally the oil is deodorised, which takes place in an almost absolute vacuum at a temperature of approximately 250C.

This process extracts the remaining colourants as well as odour-producing substances, flavourings and fatty acids from the oil.

It also removes any high-viscosity hydrocarbons or other environmentally harmful substances that might be present.

Krohne's H250 is an all-in-one metal flowmeter that operates on the float principle and is suitable for a broad range of measurement applications where the flow rates of liquids or gases need to be measured accurately.

The instrument can be configured to display either linearised or nonlinearised flow rates.
