A new noncontact temperature measuring system for calculating true temperature of furnace loads gives furnace operators a new way to cut their energy costs.

Land Infrared has created more opportunities for furnace operators to cut their energy costs by introducing a new noncontact temperature measuring system for calculating true temperature of furnace loads.

Developed principally for use in steel reheat furnaces, the new Furnace Temperature System (FTS) is suitable for many other metals and petrochemicals applications where hot background reflections can affect the accuracy of measurements.

Suitable for temperatures from 500 to 2000C, the system uses two sensors.

The second is either another FTS radiation thermometer, or a furnace thermocouple.

An FTS thermometer operating at a wavelength of 3.9um is focused on the product to measure the apparent load temperature; and the secondary sensor (FTS, or type R or S thermocouple) measures the furnace temperature.

Both outputs are transmitted to a multichannel graphic thermometer signal processor, which continuously computes the true load temperature by correcting for background radiation and load emissivity.

The resulting true load temperature output is displayed in graphical or numerical form on the processor front panel.

An RS232C or RS422A digital output is provided as standard via the serial communications facility, allowing system parameters to be adjusted from a remote computer.

Measurement accuracy is typically better than +/-20C at 1000C (in application) in gas-fired steel reheat furnaces - even in the first heating zone - and similar results are achievable in furnaces using light or heavy oil.
