Wenzel CMM gains 3D laser scanning capability

Wenzel-Xspect USA will market a version of its CMM system that contains Laser Design's 3D laser scanning technology, as a result of a distribution agreement between the two companies.

Laser Design will open branches of its GKS service bureau division at key Wenzel-Xspect locations.

The Wenzel CMM's measuring capability combined with the high-speed laser scanning will speed up analysis of complex and free-form shapes.

The automated 3D laser scanning system utilises Laser Design's SLP laser line scanning probes and includes a Renishaw PH-10 indexing head and an integrated rotary 4th axis stage.

Keith Mills, president of Wenzel-Xspect, said: 'Because the laser scanning system projects a line of laser light onto all of a part's surfaces while cameras continuously triangulate the changing distance and profile of the laser line as it sweeps along, the problems of missing data on an irregularly shaped surface are greatly reduced.' The system accuracy tests, based upon NIST-traceable gauge blocks, demonstrate a system scanning accuracy of +/-0.0004in (.01mm) at 5.15 Sigma.
