The Model E-480 a four quadrant piezo amplifier producing 2000W of dynamic power in an output voltage range of 1000V.

Piezo specialist Physik Instrumente has introduced the Model E-480 a four quadrant amplifier producing 2000W of dynamic power in an output voltage range of 1000V.

With source/sink currents up to 2000mA and a bandwidth of 5kHz, the E-480 can achieve very high slew rates even with highly capacitive piezo loads.

The differential design of the amplifier allows two piezos to be driven in a push/pull mode, important in positioning applications where a maximum force and stroke are required.

The new amplifier is appropriate for capacitive loads such as piezos and it is based on a novel design employing energy recovery technology.

Instead of dissipating the reactive power in heatsinks, it is recovered so that only the active power used by the piezo has to be supplied.

During discharge of the actuator the energy not used is returned and used to supply the amplifier.

The 1000V output provides multiple output ranges, 0/-1000, -750/+250, +/-500, -250/+750 and 0/+1000V.

Applications will include precision machining, noncircular turning of optics, active vibration damping or cancellation, smart structure movements, laser tuning and high speed switching.
