Lambda is now offering customers ready-to-run, fully configured, 19-inch rack mounted versions of its technologically-advanced configurable switch mode power supply Sirius with built-in redundancy

Lambda is now offering customers ready-to-run, fully configured, 19-inch rack mounted versions of its technologically-advanced configurable switch mode power supply Sirius with built-in redundancy In a world of increasingly complex power requirements Sirius was developed to give designers more control of the power output thanks to a wider voltage range on its two main inputs and zero minimum load

The system is targeted at mission critical applications such as telemetry for railway signalling Sirius is available in both 250W and 350W power ratings and as both units occupy the same footprint any combination of the two can be mounted in a 2U by 19-inch rack.

Also, being scaleable users can upgrade from the lower to the higher rating, should power demand increase.

The user can choose between one and six configurable outputs, ranging from 1.8 to 28V DC.

Up to 72V DC can be achieved by series connection.

AC input is 85 to 265V AC.

Both supplies are mounted in pluggable shuttles and are usually combined in a 1+1 redundancy configuration.

Optional blocking diodes are fitted to each output.

The rack meets EN55022 class A conducted and radiated EMC regulations and EN61000-2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 11 immunity standards.

The main rack enclosure, which has a 460mm deep format, is made from bright zinc-plated steel, for rigidity.

The front panels of the two shuttles are anodised aluminium for aesthetics and a single pole on/off switch is also located on the front panel together with LEDs for AC good, output good and status of each output.

Test points are also fitted to the front panel.

Connection to the customer's rack system is via micro terminals fitted to a 15mm DIN rail integral to the rack itself.

The terminations are available at the rear of the rack for all DC outputs, AC inputs and alarm signals.

Each shuttle is internally fused to protect the power supply.

Sirius is a very technologically advanced design, combining highly innovative technology with the latest design-for-manufacturing techniques to produce a power supply which although technologically advanced is also very competitively priced.

The innovative core of the new power supply is its unique planar transformer which was designed in-house by Lambda engineers.

Rather than using secondary windings, FR4 secondaries and copper stampings for high current outputs, are 'slotted' into the moulding.

The actual number of secondaries varies according to the output requirement.

Primary/secondary insulation is accomplished with triple insulated wire primaries wound onto the ends of the moulding.

The open construction of the transformer brings a number of benefits.

The spacing between the secondaries, created by the moulding, reduces interwinding capacitances and thus reduces output noise and improves the supply's RFI performance.

The planar design is slightly more 'lossy' but its open construction gives Sirius a lower transformer operating temperature than would otherwise be achieved by more traditional designs.
