Seminar builds industrial and academic links

A London Technology Network product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 22, 2006

More than 60 participants attend networking seminar event in London aimed at improving industry and academic collaboration.

Electronic paper, intelligent fashion and global-positioning prayer mats were among the technologies up for discussion at the latest networking seminar event held by London Technology Network.

It drew experts from across London and the south-east to Queen Mary, University of London.

Held on Wednesday 8th February, "Assessing the drivers and technology challenges for polymers in electronics" attracted more than 60 participants to an event aimed at improving industry and academic collaboration.

The evening of talks, networking and poster displays of the latest technologies did not disappoint.

Polymers have been used in electronics for the past 50 years, but recent advances demand technologies that are easier to install and have lighter circuitry.

A technology showcase gave a hint of things to come.

There were 12 posters displayed by LTN's team of academics (known as Business Fellows) from institutions from the London Centre for Nanotechnology to the London College of Fashion.

Paul Tomlins of the National Physical Laboratory showed a poster on electrically conducting adhesives, while Brian Falzon of Imperial College London presented work on the latest software to help in the manufacture of polymers in electronics.

Business Fellow Ben Hughes of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design presented work by the college's Soner Ozenc: a prayer mat with geo-positioning sensors to help the user locate the direction of Mecca.

In between networking against a background of the latest technologies, attendees were presented with talks by invited guests on the state of the industry and the value of industry and academic collaboration.

Chair Tony Kinloch of Imperial College London set the scene, highlighting the pleasures and pitfalls of licensing and spinouts.

Dave Wall of Dupont Teijin Films presented the latest developments in polyester film for flexible electronics, including electronic paper, while Ian McCulloch of Merck Chemicals assessed the latest innovations bringing organic electronics into the market.

Finally, the Royal College of Art's Tom Barker presented examples of how his institution had married technology and lifestyle by incorporating design principles into the product.

The next LTN networking event will be held on 22nd February 2006 on the urban environment.
