With the Olympics being staged in London in 2012, London Technology Network held a one-day networking event on technologies which might be applicable during the global event.

Held at One Great George Street on 24th May 2006, the event drew more than 130 delegates, from over 20 UK universities and colleges, and from organisations including Arup, the BBC and the Home Office Scientific Development Branch.

London Technology Network's aim is to help companies succeed through technology-intensive innovation - with their networking events bringing together the best from academia and industry.

The games networking event was their most ambitious to date as it focused on four major fields: surveillance; broadcasting; transport and landscape modelling; and infrastructure materials.

The morning session saw speakers from University College London (UCL), the University of Greenwich, Legion Limited and Atkins Rail Control and Systems, take the floor on modelling technology for transport.

Security was then on the agenda, with speakers from Thales Research and Technology and Bosch Security Systems presenting alongside UCL and Queen Mary.

The afternoon split into parallel sessions.

Infrastructure technologies were discussed in talks from Aggregate Industries and Faber Maunsell (with academic input from Imperial College London and City University).

Broadcasting and image processing technology was the focus of the other stream, with speakers from the Universities of Reading and Surrey, and an industrial perspective offered by Dartfish and BT Media and Broadcast.

For many delegates it was all about the networking - held in the Great Hall amid 48 displays of the latest technology in the field: from robust computer vision techniques for monitoring people in public spaces, to dynamic mixed reality TV.

Julia King, Imperial College London said: "It was an interesting mix and people seemed to spark ideas off each other for potential collaborations".

"It was an excellent opportunity to show off UK technology".

Other participating universities included Oxford University, Kings College London, Brunel University, Birkbeck College and University of the Arts London.
