Wireless technology events held

A London Technology Network product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Apr 27, 2007

Representatives from companies such as Orange, Cisco Europe, EDF Energy and Vodaphone met with researchers from institutions across the Greater South-East to discuss wireless technology

The first in a series of networking events on wireless technologies was held on 18th April, drawing more than 120 attendees to the RCOG.

Representatives from companies such as Orange, Cisco Europe, EDF Energy and Vodaphone met with researchers from institutions across the Greater South-East, including Imperial College London, University of Cambridge and University of Hertfordshire.

Invitees heard from a variety of speakers, who agreed the future was exciting for the industry and that in order to better harness innovation, industry and academic collaboration was vital.

Rahim Tafazolli of the University of Surrey introduced the main challenges within the wireless marketplace, and stressed the importance of integrating 4G into business models.

Royal Holloway's Stephen Wolthusen looked at the security issues inherent in the reliance on this technology, and the implications of information such as medical data being transmitted wirelessly.

Mike Short of O2 Group asked whether the success of GSM would ever be repeated, and presented a complex answer involving a future of converged networks and applications.

Ken Douglas of BP explored a variety of wireless network applications, including location awareness systems, and Mike Richardson of EAMobile addressed the challenges facing 4G networks.

For Ben Whitaker, Director of London-based company Masabi, the event also offered networking opportunities.

"I think four or five company contacts will come out of this - some with immediate work they'd like us to start with".

"We couldn't really have asked for more", Whitaker said.

Rajshree Mootanah of Anglia Ruskin University attended the event as one of LTN's Business Fellows - a network of academics who report the activities of their departments to LTN.

Mootanah brought along a cohort of colleagues working in the field and made contact with a major mobile communications firm.

"LTN is very helpful in identifying who it might be good to speak with and arranging meetings beforehand", Mootanah said.

"Wireless telecommunications is a growing area of research and we have many staff working on different applications - and the event is very useful for them".

LTN events are strictly invitation only to ensure an equal balance of industrial and academic representatives.

Attendees are invited to network among displays of the latest technologies from universities across the Greater South-East, and may also take part in a scheduled series of 15-minute meetings held throughout the night.
