Latest Technologies for Haptics and Virtual Reality was held on Tuesday 15th May and attracted more than 70 attendees wishing to learn about touch interfaces.

The power of touch was the focus of the latest LTN networking event, as researchers and industry leaders in sectors as diverse as computer gaming, healthcare and motor vehicle design converged on London Business School.

Latest Technologies for Haptics and Virtual Reality was held on Tuesday 15th May and attracted more than 70 attendees, to explore developments and new business opportunities in touch.

Speakers included representatives from UK Haptics , the University of Reading, Orange France Telecom and BP Oil International , demonstrating the many applications of these increasingly sophisticated technologies.

Displays from researchers across London and the Greater South-East reflected this diversity.

Imperial College London presented the latest augmented reality system for laparoscopic surgery, the Royal College of Art showcased flocking fibres, an extremely sensitive communication device with a furry edge, and University of East Anglia premiered "haptically aware movies".

The University of Cambridge, University College London and the University of Surrey all sent representatives.

Procter and Gamble's Virtual Reality Manager for the UK, Russell Barrow was in attendance, and found the event "thought-provoking", while Sharp Laboratories of Europe's Ian Thompson said the event was useful for getting a broad overview of the challenges and opportunities there are in haptics and virtual reality.

"I use LTN's events for finding out what academia are doing in a specific area of interest, which you can do in effectively one meeting, rather than with a lot of legwork", Thompson said.

The Haptics event was an activity of LTN's Information and Communications Special Interest Group.
