Geared motors help deliver perfect java

A Lenze product story

One of the most innovative and prestigious developments in the beverage market for years is employing the high-torque, high efficiency and long life operating benefits of Lenze's GKS geared motor technology.

The revolutionary new Cafusa coffee bag machine from Molins ITCM is set to bring the same convenience and quality to coffee as teabags do for tea.

It achieves the previously unachievable, producing coffee sachets that enable quality, freshly ground coffee to be made in almost the same time as it takes to make instant coffee.

The development of the new machine is timely as demand for coffee is growing, the beverage moving ahead strongly after outselling tea for the first time in 1997.

Until recently, the choices available to the consumer have been either instant or filter coffee, which is time consuming to make.

Aware of the drawbacks with both methods, manufacturers have been striving to develop a medium that combines the quality of filter coffee with the convenience of instant.

This has proven elusive in the past, but now, thanks to Molins ITCM's invention of the Cafusa machine, the "holy grail" has at last been achieved.

The new Cafusa machine is the latest in a long line of innovations from Molins ITCM.

It produces a coffee sachet containing approximately 40 ground coffee beans - the same measure as that of a typical espresso.

The sachet consists of a double-chamber filter attached to a large tag enabling the sachet to rest on the sides of a coffee cup.

When hot water is poured directly onto the coffee the filter ensures rapid infusion, producing a quality cup of freshly ground coffee in almost the same time as it takes to make an instant coffee.

"The Cafusa machine is unique in that it produces a coffee bag with the same flavour and quality as achieved with a cafetiere or a traditional coffee filter but without the mess and inconvenience", says Simon Strothers, Marketing Manager at Molins ITCM, "And with the flexibility and expertise from Lenze we have found an efficient and comprehensive solution to drive our engineering needs".

That "efficient and comprehensive" solution is a 2.2kW GKS06 helical bevel geared motor - part of Lenze's G-motion modular range.

"The reason for selecting Lenze's GKSO6 above all others was due to the fact that it offers performance, reliability and availability in an application which requires speed and precision for an intensive production environment", says Strothers.

The GKSO6 is notable for the high levels of torque - typically 20% above that of previous models - which it produces from an extremely compact frame.

This combination enables the geared motor to provide a high density, space saving solution to the main drive operation on the machine.

In addition, high levels of modularity mean that the GKS06 fitted easily into the machine design, and also that Molins ITCM had the flexibility to choose exactly the configuration of geared motor they required and still obtain fast delivery.

The GKS06 geared motor also delivers benefits on the Cafusa machine in terms of its high efficiency, operating life and generally quieter operation.

An operating efficiency of 95% from the helical bevel design translates into decreased energy usage for the user and reduced heat generation within the machine.

The latter, of course, aids reliability and is one of the many factors that contribute to a maintenance-free life for the geared motor of 16kh - a figure representing more than 2 years in a typical intensive production environment.

In such environments noise can often be problem.

However, with actual operating noise levels typically below 50dB, the GKS06 can be considered silent in engineering terms.

The supermarket giant Sainsbury agreed to launch the product after excellent market trials, and the product is now available in all its supermarkets - sold using its 'own brand' of Premium Blend coffee.

The machine is an example of Molins ITCM's ability to provide unique solutions to the challenges faced by its clients.

These solutions are based on innovation and succeed through good design and through working closely in supply partnerships.

The success of these partnerships is evidenced with the Cafusa machine where Molins ITCM, working closely with Lenze, has provided the optimum solution for driving the coffee bag machine with the intrinsic benefits of high efficiency and long life.
