Simple approach to powerful servo
applications

SimpleServo is a range of AC brushless servo drives offering a market leading mix of performance and value.

It is not often that manufacturers in the field of drive technology take a big step forward Yet this is the case claimed for the new SimpleServo range from Lenze

Designed and built by Lenze for the global marketplace, SimpleServo is a range of AC brushless servo drives offering a market leading mix of performance and value.

Customers also gain from the compact dimensions and ease of use, particularly from the unique EPM memory chip, which speeds and simplifies commissioning.

SimpleServo drives currently range from 2 to 10A output (up to 30A peak) and this range will be extended later.

There are two types.

The SimpleServo type 94 is suited for applications where the motion control is external, for example using a PLC, PC or motion controller.

Performance is impressive with 300% overload capacity, reaction times as short as 2us and true 16bit operation.

The PositionServo type 940 has all the performance of the 94 with the addition of programming capability for 64bit indexing to trapezoidal or multisegment moves.

Both SimpleServo types break new ground in terms of low costs, and PositionServo brings the expense of separate drives and external motion controllers into one economic, compact and easy-to-use unit.

SimpleServo can replace complex mechanical systems, such as lineshafts and cams, clutches and brakes, pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders.

This increases machine speed, accuracy and flexibility, while reducing build, maintenance and changeover times.

Proven applications include CNC equipment, semiconductor production machinery, assembly equipment, entertainment and simulation systems and biomedical laboratory equipment.

SimpleServo drives are available for machines with either a single-phase or three-phase supply to European standards of 230/400V.

In fact the range of accepted voltages is particularly wide, for example 320 to 528V on the three-phase models suiting most locations.

As might be expected for a product designed in the USA, there are further options suiting voltages encountered in the Americas such as three-phase 220V.

One more, and unusual, option is for models fitted with a voltage doubler.

This allows input at 110V single phase, yet operation with 230V motors.

The internal circuit doubles the voltage and it is available for outputs up to 4A nominal, 12A peak.

For companies selling machinery to markets with 110V supply, as is often the case in the USA, the advantage is the ability to source a standard servo drive and use it with a motor wound for the European standard of 230V.

Holding the entire drive and motor configuration, the EPM chip is simply plugged by hand into the front of the drive.

In the case of PositionServo models, it even holds the motion program.

Product Manager Scott Evans explains how customers save thousands of pounds with the EPM chip: "With the EPM, servo control parameters need only to be configured once, and can then be transferred to other SimpleServo controllers without having power applied to them".

Program transfer from one EPM to another is made easy by the EPM programmer, a handheld and battery-powered unit.

Transfer is done at the touch of a button in a process that takes 2s.

Benefits to the customer are the ability to program before reaching the machine assembly process, the speed of transferring programs, the ability to change drive, or settings to suit job changes, and elimination of programming errors.

MotionView software is shipped free in the box with each drive.

There is even a free of charge comms cable to connect between the drive and a PC - everything to make the commissioning task fast and simple.

MotionView is easy-to-use with few parameters, preconfigured motors and an auto-tune option.

Yet it is also powerful with online tuning and a two-channel oscilloscope.

International Sales Manager Peter Cribbin comments: "Well, my dog can't handle MotionView, but it is so easy my 5 year old son can". Request a free brochure from Lenze ...
