The latest motor with integrated speed control from Leroy Somer retains all the usability of the original Varmeca introduced in 1996, but with significant enhancements, including instant network connectivity The new Profibus compatible Varmeca 20 enables the user to harness the power of the PC for programming and combine this with the flexibility of network communications for status information and diagnostics

Varmeca is a range of AC variable speed and geared motors where the inverter and control electronics are built into the terminal box of the unit.

As with the original version, motor speed can be varied simply by turning the integral control knob on the drive.

With the latest model 20, motor speed can also be controlled in a variety of different ways either remotely or locally.

Programmed speed parameters can be entered locally using the Leroy Somer CDC Console.

This portable device allows a number of machines to be downloaded with the same parameters, for example as required in conveyor applications.

Alternatively the machine can be programmed by direct connection to a laptop computer running Leroy Somer's Pegase configuration software tool.

This easy to use package is compatible with Windows 95/98/Millennium or NT.

Real-time remote control options can be achieved via a Profibus network, remote potentiometer or reference signal.

A series of Mini DIP switches allow the user to configure for local or remote control, 0-10V or 4-20mA signals, and 50 or 60 Hz operation.

The available speed range of the motors is from 360 to 2400 rpm (4 pole motors) or 720 to 4800 rpm (2 pole motors).

The operating range is factory set and an optional Leroy Somer speed regulation controller allows the parameters to be changed by the user to suit the needs of the application.

Acceleration and deceleration ramps can be user selected and it is possible to coast or ramp to a stop.

Varmeca 20 can provide 4 quadrant operation with braking resistors enabling dynamic braking for emergency situations or rapid changes in speed and direction.

An optional, integrated control on the motor cover allows the machine to be stopped and started in forward or reverse.

Alternatively, a remote controller can be connected to the terminal block.

LED indicators display the status of the machine.

The new range is suitable for motors rated 0.25 to 7.5 kW three phase, with a single phase option from 0.25 to 1.5 kW.

The electronics are resin encapsulated into the device providing excellent resistance to vibration, heat and humidity.

A built in RFI filter ensures compliance with emission requirements.

Varmeca 20 is ideally suited to industries such as materials handling, conveyors, mixers, pumps and fans.

Rated to IP55 class F, it meets IEC and EN requirements and is UL and CSA approved making it suitable for global markets.

Varmeca 20 is ready for immediate use and has easily accessible connections, making it quick and easy to install.

An integral port provides connectivity to the Profibus network, giving instant access to the powerful configuration, control and diagnostics provided by this industrial fieldbus.

The integral drive reduces cabling, installation and mounting costs.

There are a variety of mounting position options including foot mounted, flange mounted, and face mounted.

Other options include 2nd shaft, drip cover, and FCR failsafe brake.

There is built in protection for overload or mechanical locking, short circuit of the motor windings or phase to earth insulation fault.

Constant torque is available over a speed range of 1:7 and a power factor of close to unity is maintained throughout the whole speed range.

Varmeca 20 can also be supplied with a reduction gearbox combining mechanical reduction with the flexibility of electronic control, making the unit suitable for a wide variety of high torque applications.

It makes a lot of sense to combine a drive and electric motor to make a unit that is quick to install, easy to operate and reliable in use.

Leroy Somer have taken this one step further with the Varmeca 20 providing the added benefits of ease of programming, combined with the power and convenience of fieldbus connectivity.
