IT NVQ benefits staff and business

A Learn Direct Business product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jul 31, 2009

Learn Direct Business has supplied employees at at the Stockport site of Tyco Fire Suppression and Building Products, a supplier of fire protection, with National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs).

The Stockport site offers NVQs in Business and Administration; Information Technology (ITQ); Team Leading; and Customer Services to its employees.

Michelle Atkinson, human resources manager at Tyco's Stockport office identified the need for accredited qualifications after conducting an employee engagement survey.

A practical example of how the NVQs benefited both staff and the business is the Learn Direct Business ITQ course.

Completing ITQ gives employees the chance to develop the IT skills they need to work more effectively.

From the use of word processors to spreadsheets, the course improves individual employee skills, helping to accelerate the uptake of technology in the business.

More than 20 employees have completed, or are working towards, an ITQ across several departments.

As a result, employees are now providing weekly action updates via email, completing performance reviews in Excel, logging overtime on the system, and even using their new IT skills at home to buy and sell on eBay.

The training was free thanks to government funding through the Train to Gain scheme.
