NVQs assist with health and safety compliance

Pirelli's Carlisle site has turned to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) from Learn Direct Business to improve staff welfare, efficiency, motivation and job satisfaction.
Paul Kirkwood, centre manager, said: 'To start with, we introduced the Business Improvement Techniques NVQ, with 40 employees from across the business enrolling on the course.
'Staff engaged in a number of hands-on exercises to better understand health and safety aspects of their jobs.
'In addition, learners were asked to thinking about ways that machinery or tools could be adapted to improve efficiency.
'These skills are easily adaptable into the day jobs of our employees.' With around 1,000 employees based at Pirelli's Carlisle site, the company decided to set up a training and development drop-in centre for staff.
The centre initially offered Learn Direct Business Skills for Life courses, but the company decided to offer a broader range of training, including a number of NVQ courses.
'Training is a vital element for staff welfare at Pirelli,' said Kirkwood.
'Many of our staff join us straight out of school with very few or no formal qualifications.
'The centre provides employees with a designated learning hub where they can discuss their training needs with development professionals.' NVQs are particularly important to Pirelli, since it depends on its compliance with a number of legislative health and safety measures.
For example, all forklift operators are required to pass a forklift driving course and then take a refresher course every three years.
