"Back to basics" approach speeds tractor design
Industrial design group Lakes System Design has just submitted a project management and product development plan to one of Canada's newest manufacturers of industrial turf tractors.
"The challenge was allowing maximum power for hauling up ramps, but limiting maximum ground speed", says Jeff Hunt of Lakes Design.
"The throttle limiting servo system allows the OEM to control the maximum ground speed without modifying the transmission, shifters, or governing the engine speed.
It offers the best performance while maximizing safety".
Developed originally for Toyota Land Cruisers, the new technology can be applied to 12 and 24V vehicles.
Lakes Design has developed a package to limit ground speed, with added capabilities of tweaking performance curves and emissions.
"We can take a stock vehicle originally built for on-road service, and completely remap the performance for Industrial service", says Hunt.
"Underground that means power when you're hauling, and reducing emissions when you're cruising or idling.
It can be supplied to the OEM as a plug-and-play kit after the initial programming".
The system was developed with the Dodge Ram and Hummer in mind, but can be applied to most electronically controlled engines.
