Label solves a sticky problem for Perkins

A Le Mark Self-Adhesives product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 15, 2005

A recent project for Le Mark involved the requirement for a heat, solvent and tamper resistant identification label/nameplate for installation on custom produced tooling.

Some projects that can initially appear "simple" to achieve can often require a great amount of resource to make them actually happen.

Following a meeting between Mark Stembridge, Tooling Specialist at Perkins Engines, and Linda Gibbons Sales Director of Le Mark Group, during a Peterborough Chamber of Commerce networking event, Le Mark became involved in a "problem solving" exercise for Perkins Engines.

The requirement was to develop and manufacture a heat, solvent and tamper resistant identification label/nameplate for installation on custom produced tooling used at Perkins Engines and its suppliers' sites around the world.

These must remain in place at all times and clearly identify these items as required to manufacture Perkins components.

This included press tools, high-pressure aluminium dies, machining fixtures etc.

A Japanese pressure sensitive self-adhesive system unique to the UK (SSS 5585) was selected, this would form an incredibly strong bond once cured.

A combination process of screen-printing and steel etching was required to ensue durability to meet the Perkins specification.

Over 12 months of testing, trials, and evaluation were carried out, including extreme temperatures, vibration, oils and solvents.

These extensive tests showed Le Mark's product to be able to produce the best solution, and so the company won the contract, amidst fierce opposition within the industry market.

Le Mark's Sales Director Linda Gibbons stated: "It was an incredible challenge for us to develop and produce an ultradurable high-quality label/plate such as this".

"Largely due to the severe environmental operating conditions, ie grey iron and aluminium foundries, machine and press shops, we used all internal St Ives resources plus our satellite facilities in Kent".

"In addition we received 100% support from our Japanese partners".

"This involved a visit from the company's Tokyo-based technical engineer to evaluate product criteria, environmental parameters, and the stress and 'shear' involved of the intended adhesive system to be used".

"We are looking forward to expand developing our relationship with Perkins Engines, now that we have proved we can meet their exacting standards".

"We also see excellent export potential with this new product range, in particular for manufacturers designing equipment for extreme conditions".
