LMS and NPO Saturn have signed a contract for a 250-channel jet engine testing solution.

LMS and NPO Saturn have signed a contract for a 250-channel jet engine testing solution at MAKS 2005, the International Aviation and Space Salon in Moscow, Russia The LMS dynamic testing solution will be deployed on Test Bench 26, located at NPO Saturn's test centre near Rybinsk, and dedicated for certification and production testing of the new SaM146 gas-turbine engine

NPO Saturn is a leading Russian company in the field of development and production of gas turbine engines for aviation, navy, energy production and gas compression stations.

The renovation of the NPO Saturn Test Bench 26 is realised within the framework of the SaM146 programme, a joint development of NPO Saturn and the French engine manufacturer Snecma.

The SaM146 will power all versions of the Russian Regional Jet (RRJ) created by ZAO "Sukhoy Civil Aircraft".

The RRJ is a 60, 75 and 98 seat jet plane, for basic and long-range flights, and provides commonality that will give operators substantial savings.

In the highly competitive aerospace industry, efficient testing is vital to improving an engine design and increasing the cost-effectiveness of the certification process.

Aero-engine manufacturers are asked to develop silent, clean and more efficient engines by increasing power/weight ratios.

This requires many innovations such as, new lighter materials, new and more complex blades geometries and new nozzle shapes.

In this process, testing is an important step towards validation of design and/or certification of the engines.

The trend in physical testing is towards an increased number of both static and dynamic channels to acquire more data, with increased online and post-processing capabilities.

This allows engineers to gain better insight into the engine performances and reliability over time.

The LMS offering matches these challenges with its unique combination of the LMS Test.Lab software suite and LMS Scadas III data acquisition front-ends.

The fully synchronised 24bit front-ends are dedicated to vibration and acoustic testing and provide integrated signal conditioning, onboard storage of calibration values, onboard parallel processing, high performance sampling and high throughput to disk rates.

These key features support efficient testing with a maximum of engineering insights into the noise and vibration behaviour of the engine.

LMS Test.Lab offers flexible visualisation of the measurements on several graphics screens on the control consoles.

It also offers alarm monitoring on all the measurement channels, offering optimal security during the test.

The LMS system allows gapless recording of large data volumes during at least 8 hours.

All data are stored on a centralised archiving system, and is easily managed through LMS Tec.Manager.

Alexander Piontkovsky, Director Information Technologies, NPO Saturn, sees the selection of LMS as an important step: "LMS is an essential building block in sustaining the NPO Saturn capability to carry out the most advanced development projects and production of gas turbine machinery".

"The excellent track record of LMS as a supplier for the aerospace industry, and its local support team in Russia, convinced NPO to select LMS".

"Through the implementation of the LMS large channel count solution and its extensive analysis capabilities, we expect our engineers to securely perform dynamic jet engine testing, while at the same time accelerate data acquisition and test validation, to lead us to maximum return of our testing facilities".

Filip Pintelon, General Manager of the LMS Test Division, concluded: "We are very pleased with NPO Saturn's choice for LMS solutions in the challenging application of dynamic jet engine testing".

"Increasing performance through high channel count, reliable and automatic tracking of channels and digital technology will support NPO Saturn in efficient production and certification testing of state of the art engines".

"Our LMS Russia representative office is strongly committed to assist in the successful deployment of the LMS solution, and safeguard NPO Saturn's excellent reputation as the Russian largest designer and manufacturer of gas turbine machinery".
