HPL Prototypes to take over Lotus site

A Group Lotus product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 15, 2001

HPL Prototypes has purchased the assets and ongoing business of Group Lotus's small satellite engineering facility at Allesley, near Coventry, UK

Group Lotus has announced that HPL Prototypes has purchased the assets and ongoing business of its small satellite engineering facility at Allesley, near Coventry, UK (Lotus-Coventry).

Following a restructure throughout the whole of Group Lotus to align with its engineering customers' changing demands, its Coventry operations are now no longer in-line with Lotus' current business strategy.

Lotus has invested substantially in new state-of-the-art facilities at its Hethel Headquarters in Norfolk, UK, at its USA base in Michigan and also in Malaysia.

All of these sites have vehicle engineering and design capabilities that are now duplicated at Coventry.

Therefore, with the optimisation of resources at these three sites, the design facilities at Coventry have become excess to the company's requirements.

The transfer of the business of Lotus-Coventry, which employs 31 staff, to HPL Prototypes Ltd is effective immediately.

Terry Playle, Chief Executive of Group Lotus plc, is pleased with the sale: "I am delighted that HPL Prototypes has acquired the business, which includes the valuable asset of its staff.

The operations of Lotus-Coventry are not strategically where we wish Lotus business to be.

Therefore, we are concentrating on what we do best, providing world leading automotive engineering services at our many sites around the world." Stuart Le Cornu, Chairman of Hartshill Precision Holdings Ltd (parent company of HPL Prototypes Ltd.) is enthusiastic about the future: " We are pleased to have been able to acquire this facility at Coventry and we will be relocating our other company Hartshill Precision to the Allesley site.

We intend to make full use of the studios, fabrication workshops and five-axis milling machines which are capable of producing full sized show car models.

These facilities, together with the skilled staff, give us a great opportunity to strengthen our postion within the automotive and aerospace industry.
