Optical engineering wins Loughborough its third Queen's Anniversary Prize

Loughborough University has been awarded a Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education 2000, the third time it has captured one of the prestigious awards, which are awarded biennially in recognition of outstanding educational achievement in areas of service and benefit to the nation.

The 2000 Prize has been awarded to the Optical Engineering Group, in recognition of its pioneering role in developing applications of modern optics and laser technologies to find practical solutions to real-world problems.

The applications developed by the Group have been utilised in manufacturing and environmental industries, in health and safety, medicine, defence, entertainment and the arts.

In recent years the Group has worked on numerous projects, including boiler design to minimise pollutant emissions, remote pulse oximetry, time resolved shape measurement, redesign of asthma inhalers, and the measurement of changes to the eye surface due to cataract operations.

Through its skills and experience in the field over many years, the University's Optical Engineering Group now provides a national resource which is internationally respected.

Loughborough is one of just a handful of institutions to have received the Queen's Anniversary Prize three times.

The University received its first award in 1994 for its partnerships with the aerospace industry, namely Rolls-Royce and BAe, and its second award in 1998 in recognition of the Institute of Development Engineering's unique service to developing countries, providing and managing sustainable infrastructure.

Her Majesty The Queen will make the official presentation of the 2000 Prize at a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace in February 2001.
