Cedar is a new ecodesign training and consultancy service from Loughborough University's Department of Design and Technology.

The programme has been established to assist electrical and electronic companies within the Midlands to meet new legislation from Europe.

It aims to inform design and manufacturing businesses in the region about the benefits of ecodesign, and empower them to tackle ecodesign issues within their own companies.

More then 20 representatives of manufacturing businesses from across the region attended the event, which was held at the university's Innovation Centre on 10th December.

The event included an excellent presentation by Hugh Smith from Conservus, who provided an outline of the forthcoming Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.

The WEEE directive will have a major impact on all companies in the electrical and electronic sectors, requiring them to take responsibility for "end of life" activities such as disassembly and recycling.

The Cedar launch, which was supported by the Sustainable Design Network and the Engineering Employers Federation, also included key speakers from The Boots Company and Loughborough University.

The aim of the event was to provide attendees with information about the implications of the WEEE Directive on their business and to show them how to take advantage of the high quality, low cost Cedar ecodesign training.

Speaking on behalf of Cedar, Dr Vicky Lofthouse said: "We have received a positive response from attendees and find it encouraging that companies appreciate the role and responsibility they have towards the future of the environment".
