A Ukrainian glass company has been given the go ahead to upgrade its factory and increase output, thanks in part to a UK team of engineering specialists.

The JSC Gostomel glass factory near Kiev applied to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for a loan to increase its production of glass from 360 to 385 tonnes a day.

On the advice of the EBRD, Gostomel brought in the expertise of Lichfield-based Lorien Engineering Solutions and Hamburg-based Continental Glass Engineering to help it put its case for a loan.

Lorien Engineering Solutions managing director David Morris helped Gostomel prepare a business plan outlining the actions needed to achieve its strategic objectives over the next five years, while Continental Glass Engineering drew up technical plans for the factory improvements.

The Gostomel factory specialises in bottles for vodka, beer, soft drinks and health and beauty care products.

David Morris said: "Consumption of glass in the Ukraine is currently very low, because there are very few local manufacturers supplying goods to the FMCG market.

There is however much scope for growth, and plans for the Gostomel Glass Factory over the next ten years include increasing the current output of beer bottles tenfold to support the emerging local production.

As with much of the industrial manufacturing infrastructure of the region, the factory has suffered from a lack of investment.

This loan will enable it to reverse the trend enabling the refurbishment of one of its main furnaces.

The successful completion of this project will allow the company to meet its short-term strategic objectives, with longer-term objectives supported by plans to build a fourth furnace in 2003/2004".

He believes the glass market in the Ukraine cannot grow without significant investment in additional capacity.

He added: "The potential for increased demand of glass products is obviously very strong but it is not clear whether the Ukrainian glass industry will be able to respond fast enough to keep up with that demand.

This project will help the Gostomel factory to maximise their potential, hopefully riding the wave of new business rather than being swamped by it".

The improvement work started at the beginning of the year.
