Management specialist Lorien Engineering Solutions has recently completed a series of successful projects for leading UK brewer Scottish Courage.

The projects at Tyne Brewery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which include the design, installation and commissioning of a high gravity blender and fermentation vessel rationalisation, were overseen by Lorien Project Manager Peter Jones, who was based at Tyne Brewery for the duration.

He said: "We have established an excellent relationship with Scottish Courage over the past four years and really have become part of their team".

The installation of a high gravity blender at the brewery has proved very successful.

This enables higher output from the fermentation capacity, following a complete move from manual open squares to closed fermentation vessels.

The blender is delivering high quality with repeatable results.

Jones said: "We delivered a cost-effective solution compared to the alternatives, with minimal disruption on site.

We trained the operators, prepared operation and maintenance manuals and provided commitment and support to their business needs".

An issue with a manual process used to shift the position of hoses on fermentation vessels was solved by Lorien Engineering with the design a revolutionary 8x8 swing bend unit, designed to negate the need for 64 automatic valves.

Jones said: "This has simplified operations in an extremely cost-effective way, replacing the manual hoses within the fermentation process at a fraction of the cost of an automated design, yet still providing flexibility of operation".

Lorien Engineering Solutions has also rationalised bulk caustic distribution on the site, enabling a lower percentage caustic solution to be used.

The site formerly had two intakes for bulk caustic, one automatic and one manual.

Lorien installed a new automated system to cover the whole site, dealing with design, commissioning, mechanical and electricals and health and safety, with minimal disruption.

Lorien Engineering has undertaken a number of feasibility studies on further projects for Scottish Courage, including replacement of bulk units and installation of new effluent flumes and monitoring equipment.

Jones added: "Knowing our client's needs and standards so well has enabled us to anticipate their needs and, therefore, progress projects smoothly and with minimum disruption to their operations".

Lorien Engineering Solutions has a staff of more than 60 specialists who design and deliver manufacturing capital projects in brewing, drinks, food, industrial and pharmaceutical production environments.

Working for many of the world's top manufacturing organisations within the UK and overseas, the company was recently awarded a President's Award for occupational health and safety in construction by RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents).
