Lorien Engineering Solutions (LES) has exceeded its targets in what proved a tough year for the manufacturing sector.

Lorien Engineering Solutions (LES) has exceeded its targets in what proved a tough year for the manufacturing sector.

The company's parent group, Lorien, has just announced its preliminary results for the last fiscal year.

Executive Chairman Bert Morris comments within his statement to investors that LES has seen an increased demand in the year through "strong partnership relationships with our customers".

LES Managing Director David Morris said: "Last year was a challenging year for many of our customers, which in turn meant that there were few major projects in the market place and an increased focus on added value".

"Our strong position was maintained through a continued emphasis on value solutions and building close relationships with our client-partners".

He also said that the high level of repeat business - over 80% - had contributed to the success of Lichfield-based Lorien Engineering Solutions.

The company had also won important new clients, helping to fuel the future growth of the company.

The year began well with major contracts for Coors Brewers and Walkers Snack Foods.

This work was supplemented through the year by a range of other work including a major expansion project for Grampian Country Foods.

The company's strategy of concentrating on a wide range of sectors had again proven to be beneficial with all sectors either being close to or above target.

The brewing sector performance was excellent with major project work for Coors Brewers, and the food sector maintained a steady growth through working with a wide range of clients including Cadbury, Kraft Foods and Walkers Snack Foods.

The pharmaceutical sector continued its strong growth both in terms of turnover and clients, with contracts secured from clients including 3M, BioProgress, and Boehringer Ingleheim.

Industrial manufacturing and waste management progressed well with a new business development manager appointed in order to service new clients in these sectors most effectively.

Lorien has been working closely with a number of companies engaged in waste sortation and processing, developing industrial-scale schemes to enable the fulfilment of various waste directives handed down by the EU and adopted by the UK government.

David Morris added: "We increased our staff by around 10% in 2003 and have placed a keen emphasis on both selective recruitment and the training and developing of our existing staff".

"This enhances both the range and depth of skills in the company, and we're therefore better positioned to meet the ever expanding needs of our clients".
