Project management specialist Lorien Engineering Solutions has been chosen by the UK's leading brewer Scottish Courage to manage a scheme to add capacity at the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh.

Scottish Courage is closing the Fountain Brewery in Edinburgh and its McEwan's ales will be brewed at the Caledonian Brewery alongside Caledonian's existing brands.

Production of lager brands will transfer to other Scottish Courage breweries in the UK.

Lorien Engineering Solutions has been appointed to manage the project to increase capacity, which will involve demolishing a building formerly used for social events and replacing it with a new building housing additional brewing vessels and fermenting capacity.

The Caledonian Brewery was established in 1869 and still uses some of the original Victorian equipment.

It has direct-fired open coppers which are the last of their kind in Britain.

Lorien Project Manager Roger Cope said: "The Caledonian Brewery is a heritage brewery which means that any building work has to be carried out particularly carefully".

Work begins in September and the new building is due to be commissioned in May 2005.
