Project management specialist Lorien Engineering Solutions has been chosen by Unilever UK Foods to lead a six-phase redevelopment at the 'Marmite factory' in Burton-on-Trent, UK.

Lorien, which is based in nearby Lichfield, is acting as project management partner on a 10 million pound refurbishment, which itself is part of a wider three-year redevelopment at the site, where Marmite has been made since the 1950s.

The six-phase stage under management by Lorien includes the refurbishment of existing infrastructure and the installation of automated systems, replacing equipment which in some cases, is more than 45 years old.

Among the latest installations is a 22m high evaporator.

Lorien project manager Antony Carter said: "One of the most challenging aspects of the project is the logistics of ensuring that production continues uninterrupted while new equipment is brought on stream".

The sixth and final phase of the refurbishment is due for completion in June 2006.
