Steam is no problem for GWR level measurement
Magnetrol International has a new probe, specifically developed to meet the unique challenges posed by level measurement in saturated steam applications.
Accurate and effective level measurement in applications involving saturated steam, such as boilers, de-aerators and boiler feed water heaters, can be a problem for traditional level measurement devices.
For example, density and dielectric changes along with conductivity fluctuations, can impair the accuracy and reliability of displacer and capacitance level measurement instruments.
Now Magnetrol International has a new probe, specifically developed to meet the unique challenges posed by saturated steam applications.
The Eclipse 705 with 7MS probe, is the first GWR (guided wave radar) level measurement device unit to have obtained official approval for use in saturated steam applications.
Based on the successful Eclipse family of GWR devices, the 705 and 7MS combination is the result of two years of extensive development and testing.
Capable of withstanding process conditions of 110bar at 320C, the Eclipse 705 is ideally suited for water/steam applications.
Use of materials such as 316 stainless steel (1.4401), alumina and Peek create a robust probe that withstands the high temperature, high pressure and corrosive nature of steam applications.
The alumina and Peek insulators limit the temperature at the Aegis O-rings to 65C.
Aegis is a material that is resistant to steam, rated up to +200C and is highly regarded in the chemical industry, whereas Peek is a high-temperature plastic typically used in steam valves.
The unit, which is lightweight, easy to handle and allows for quick, simple configuration, is unaffected by changes in specific gravity, so it is an excellent alternative to torque tube displacer transmitters and DP transmitters.
Additional benefits include no moving parts, so maintenance and associated costs are reduced.
Typical applications for the Eclipse 705/7MS probe combination are wherever accurate and reliable level measurement is required in saturated steam applications, such as controlling water levels in boilers in power generation and oil/chemical refining plants.

Magnetrol celebrates Eclipse Model 705's 10 years
It has been 10 years since Magnetrol released the Eclipse Model 705, the first two-wire guided wave radar (GWR) level transmitter to measure liquid level independent of liquid characteristics. -
Level transmitter allows easy fitting
Magnetrol's Jupiter 200 uses the electro-magnetic field of the float inside the bypass cage of the MLI to determine the liquid level. -
Versatile switches monitor varied substances
Thermatel TD2 switches have a spherical tip sensor and have passed the in-place cleanability testing according to the European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group procedures. -
Software connects instrument experts
The new Foundation fieldbus DTM can be shared over the internet and e-mail, allowing specialists worldwide to help solve a field problem without dismantling a field instrument. -
Level sensor handles high viscosity
The enlarged Eclipse coaxial GWR probe provides outstanding performance regardless of the installation and will resist high viscosity.
