Promising high efficiency and amazing durability in very compact packages, Maxon's high-tech micro-drive family includes the company's smallest motor yet.

At just 6mm diameter, the new RE 6 motor has an assigned power rating of 0.3W - just a little lower than the 0.5W of its slightly bigger brother the RE 8.

Both these DC motors are built with ceramic shafts - as thin as a pencil lead (0.8mm diameter) - which are superior to steel versions in many respects.

In particular, these shafts are virtually wear-free and much more resistant to breaking than their more conventional counterparts.

An absence of magnetic detent is a characteristic of these motors, which feature the patented Maxon ironless winding, as is their rapid acceleration (thanks to a low moment of inertia), low electromagnetic interference, low inductance and high efficiency.

Whereas the RE 6 and RE 8 have precious metal brushes, others in the family are brushless and are electronically rather than mechanically commutated.

The smallest is the tiny EC 6, with a 6mm diameter and 1.2W rating.

With no brushes, bearing wear is practically the only limiting factor in the service life of Maxon's electronically commutated motors.

Their rotation is detent-free and reaches high speeds, even at low voltages.

Moreover, Maxon's winding system allows the construction of these motors to be tailored precisely to suit specific applications.

Another Maxon addition is the EC 10 flat brushless motor.

In this branch of the family, the rotor is external and takes the form of a rotating shell which encloses a ring-shaped permanent magnet.

The new one is 10mm diameter and a mere 2.52mm in depth.

It joins a line-up of nine existing flat brushless motors, the smallest of which is the EC 6 flat - with a 6mm diameter and 2.2mm depth.
