More options in flat brushless DC drives

A Maxon Motor UK product story

Brushless DC motor range now comprises nine motors, covering everything from a diminutive drive with a 6mm diameter to a very substantial unit measuring 90mm in diameter.

In response to customer demand, Maxon Motor has added five new products to its lineup of flat, brushless DC motors.

The range now comprises nine motors, covering everything from a diminutive drive with a 6mm diameter to a very substantial unit measuring 90mm in diameter.

Their nominal operating range stretches from 30mW to 90W.

"People are increasingly seeking to fit precision drives into very small spaces", explains Keith Ellenden, CEO of Maxon Motor UK.

"As well as reducing motor size, we have found that altering the shape can have the desired effect".

In contrast to the more familiar long and slim brushless DC motors with internal rotors, sometimes known as "squirrel cage" motors, these flat - or "pancake" - motors have external rotors.

The rotating shell, which forms the rotor, contains a ring-shaped multipole permanent magnet.

The fixed stator, positioned centrally, is also multipole.

Its windings produce the magnetic field needed for rotary motion.

All Maxon's brushless DC drives - also described as "electronically commutated" motors - have a number of advantages over units fitted with brushes.

Most important, perhaps, is their almost unlimited service life.

They are also very favourable in terms of their torque handling characteristics, high performance and extremely wide speed range.

In developing the new motors, particular emphasis has been placed on minimising operating noise.

Suited to a huge variety of situations, the flat drives have a permissible ambient temperature range of -40 to +100C.

Customers can now choose between diameters of 6, 13.6, 20, 32, 45 and 90mm.

The 32 and 45mm diameter versions are offered in varying lengths to suit different applications.

For added convenience, the smaller motors are fitted with flexprint while the two most powerful units have integral rigid circuit boards made of epoxy glass laminate.

"We are always very keen to meet customers' needs", says Ellenden.

"In addition to designing these five new products according to the feedback we have received, we have set up a highly automated production process that guarantees very high quality, low costs and quick delivery times".
