Marcrist International has been selected by the National Merchant Buying Society as a supplier of diamond based cutting, drilling and finishing products for the building and construction industries

Doncaster based Marcrist International has been selected by the National Merchant Buying Society (NMBS) as a supplier of diamond based cutting, drilling and finishing products for use in the building and construction industries The new approval is an important move for both Marcrist and NMBS

There has been a large change in the attitudes towards the use of diamond cutting blades and core drills.

Diamond blades, for example, were once viewed as expensive and more easily damaged through misuse than their traditional abrasive counterparts.

Times have now have changed.

Diamond blades are widely recognised as more cost-effective than abrasive discs.

"When working with NMBS to become an approved supplier, we first had to prove that our products offered genuine benefits to end users," says Ian Bannister, Marcrist's product manager.

"Not only did we have to outline the now widely accepted advantages of diamond cutting systems, we also had to demonstrate why our products are superior to other diamond based systems." One of the examples of the Marcrist approach to quality is in its use of ground carbon tool steel for the core of its diamond cutting blades.

A less expensive alternative is to make the core of the disc from stamped steel sheet, but research by Marcrist has proven this approach to be a false economy.

A pressed disc is less able to absorb side loadings, and in use, blades of this type have a tendency to wobble.

This in turn leads to the blade failing before its cutting properties are lost.

In addition, Marcrist double laser welds its segments, which contain the diamond grit, around the edge of the core.

This prevents the segments breaking off during use, making Marcrist Diamond blades safe to use.

When cutting hard materials, the diamonds are worn down more rapidly, so a softer segment is used to allow fresh diamonds to be exposed.

This way cutting performance is maintained.

For a soft or abrasive material, the segments are made from a harder material.

The diamonds wear more slowly, and the harder material ensures the diamonds remain in place long enough to make maximum use of their cutting qualities.

"We were impressed by the depth of knowledge Marcrist has in this specialised sector," says Chris Hayward, marketing manager at NMBS.

"Independent builders merchants will now able to offer end users the right tool for a full range of cutting applications without having to refer them to a specialist." This is a point picked up by Ian Bannister, who points out that whatever the trade or application, there will be a cutting blade specifically for it.

He also suggests it is more cost-effective to choose the correct blade for the application.

"Marcrist blades are available to cut a wide range of materials," he says.

"Each range is available in three price/performance classes, and all Marcrist blades come complete with a performance guarantee.

Marcrist's diamond products span many more applications than ordinary diamond blades." Marcrist also offer comprehensive diamond core drill systems.

Designed to compare favourably with tungsten equivalents on price, Marcrist suggest its diamond core drills have working advantages.

These include producing a clean hole with no 'break out'.

Through its other divisions Marxco and Powermarc, Marcrist is also able to offer machines for surface preparation and dust extraction and a wide range of power tool accessories including abrasive cutting and grinding discs.

In 1998 Marcrist won the Construction News Quality in Construction Award for 'Research and Innovation - Plant and Equipment' for its Combi dust control system.

Other awards have included the HAE Safety and Service Award, the HAE Supplier of the Year award, the HIREX Special Award, the DTI Smart Awards Research and Development Project Award and a regional Export Award.

The company is also ISO 9001 accredited, and is Europe's only producer of performance guaranteed diamond tools.

NMBS currently has 400 approved suppliers, each having been selected by a specialist committee to ensure the products on offer are of good quality.

Of equal importance, members buying these products through the NMBS achieve bulk savings normally reserved for volume purchasers.

"The NMBS also automatically underwrites any order placed by members with our approved suppliers.

We negotiate terms, rebates and special offers on their behalf as a buying group," says Chris Hayward.

"Suppliers like Marcrist can treat the society's members as they would any other major purchaser, offering very favourable terms." Of equal importance, the NMBS system also means independent merchants can buy from suppliers without the need for opening a direct account, with the supplier having the risk of bad debts removed.

These factors combine to streamline the whole buying process, greatly reducing administration for NMBS merchant members and approved suppliers.

"For Marcrist the relationship with the NMBS is extremely positive," adds Ian Bannister.

"Not only do we have the advantage of agreed purchasing systems, we are also able to market our product range through 720 independent builders merchants.".
