Spin testing assures magnet assembly quality
Rare earth magnet manufacturer Magnequench has installed specialist equipment at its UK plant to check the balance of rotary magnet assemblies.
Rare earth magnet manufacturer Magnequench has installed specialist equipment at its UK plant to check the balance of rotary magnet assemblies.
Each assembly is loaded individually into the spin-testing machine and accelerated rapidly to a speed of around 18,000rev/min to confirm that it is exactly concentric and will perform as required when it is mounted onto a shaft as part of a motor, generator or other electrical device.
In appropriate cases the spin-tester also checks the integrity of the bond between the main body of the assembly and the magnets mounted onto it.
"The whole test takes only a minute or so, but it eliminates the risk of many hours of lost time and inconvenience on the customer's production line", says General Manager Andrew Myers.
"Ready-to-fit assemblies for aerospace and similar applications are a growing part of our business, and as our role in supply chain management develops we need to be confident that we are delivering a zero-defect product".
