HMIs, SCADA software and general devices with RS232C communications can now be integrated into an FP2 PLC system

Users of Matsushita Electric Works' mid-range high-performance FP2 modular programmable logic controller now have the option of adding computer communication units (CCUs) and serial data units (SDUs) to their capability.

As a result, HMIs, SCADA software and general devices with RS232C communications can be integrated into an FP2 system via these modules.

This enables the PLC with CCU/SDU additions to become, for example, an essential element in a factory automation data processing system.

The PLC itself packs numerous functions into its compact body, the five module back-plane measuring just 140 x 100 x 110mm (w x h x d).

With up to 28 modules, the FP2 can address a maximum of 1600 inputs and outputs (2048 via remote I/O).

Four CPU variants are available depending upon the specification, including embedded types that combine digital or analogue I/O within a single module.

Another CPU with an integrated network function allows simple, decentralized controller construction.

With the FP2 PLC, sequence, positioning and analogue control and network functions are all simple to configure, and communications functions are taken care of by the two RS232C interfaces.

Now, however, communications have been further improved with the addition of the new communication cards.

The CCU provides easy bi-directional communication between a computer and the PLC via its RS232C port.

The data communication link functions provided include computer link and data transfer, and use of the CCU reduces load on the computer.

The SDU allows the easy interfacing of serial data I/O to RS232C equipped devices such as inverters, weighing machines or operator panels with simple instruction sequences.

Use of the SDU enables data to be controlled with a simple program.

In addition, two RS232C ports are available, many units can be installed and 500 bytes of data can be transferred at a time.

Typical applications include barcode reading in a factory automation environment or ticket reading in a car park.
