Coaxial switch handles high-frequency requirements

A Panasonic Electric Works UK product story

The RZ series from Matsushita Electric Works is a range of coaxial switches that will find applications within cellular phone base stations, oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers and broadcast equipment

The RZ series from Matsushita Electric Works is a range of coaxial switches that have been developed to satisfy even the most demanding of high-frequency switching requirements.

These custom made devices support failsafe, latching and TTL-drive circuit configurations and therefore find applications within cellular phone base stations, test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers, as well as TV and broadcast equipment.

As well as offering impressive high-frequency performance and flexibility, the RZ series also offers convenience.

To minimise the complexities associated with high-frequency PCB design, the device's single shielded package houses a number of discrete relays whilst its SMA connectors enable it to be easily integrated into most high-frequency applications.

To meet all application requirements this versatile coaxial series is available in a wide variety of configurations including SPDT, DPDT, 3P4T and dedicated transfer switches.

Suitable for either 50-Ohm or 75-Ohm impedance levels, the RZs functionality, shape and connector size can all be customised to meet end-user demands.

A popular application for these devices is to provide redundancy within mobile communication mast circuits.

The mobile phone network providers are under great pressure to provide high quality service at all times.

If one node should fail for any length of time this can be disastrous to the reputation of the network provider.

The solution is to install multiple components in the base stations and remotely switch out faulty parts thus minimising customer disruption.

A service engineer can then attend to rectify the fault.

High-frequency Relays from Matsushita Electric Works The RZ series of coaxial switches use tried and tested relay technology from Matsushita's existing range.

Electromechanical relays currently within the Matsushita product range are able to cope with frequencies up to 26GHz.

Relays are now available in both through-hole and more recently surface-mount variants.

The devices working in the higher frequencies are equipped with SMA or BNC connectors for coaxial cable connection.
