MCE Newmarket has launched a new range of 'semi-custom' solid state switches designed to fill the gap between 'off the shelf' components and fully customised designs.
MCE Newmarket has launched a new range of 'semi-custom' solid state switches designed to fill the gap between 'off the shelf' components and fully customised designs.
Although a wide range of 'off-the-shelf' solid state switches is available, there is rarely one which precisely matches the requirements of a particular application.
Custom-made switches, however, are frequently too expensive to be an option.
MCE has been working to address this market by providing semi-custom switches for handling kilowatt-level powers at up to 600 V.
The approach taken is analogous to a semi-custom ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) where the 'building blocks' are proven and manufactured, awaiting only a final interconnection layer.
The building blocks being developed by MCE include matched transistor modules, sense resistors, isolating transformers, programmable ASICs, high heat conduction substrates and high current packaging.
The capability allows selection of the required switching power, protection and indication functions.
Using proven components and circuits, the desired functionality can be incorporated into a suitable package.
The nature and positioning of the connections can then be used to achieve specific performance requirements and the package can be sealed according to the environmental requirements.
The switch is usually significantly smaller than 'off-the-shelf' alternatives.
The semi-custom approach permits switches to meet a range of specifications including shape, size, connection, speed and temperature range.
It allows the switch to be matched to the electrical, thermal and mechanical requirements of the system without needing to design a custom power switch from scratch.
