PH transmitter for solvent treatment
system

Each Viridian BioVox unit contains three Mettler Toledo products including a pH transmitter model pH2100, a pH electrode type HA405-DXK-S8/120 and an electrode housing type InFlow 751C

The impact of manufacturing on the global environment coupled with heightened public concern has created a hot political topic over recent years Corporations are under continued pressure to conform to increasingly stringent standards with new legislation governing emissions, to ensure that minimum harm or impact is made to the environment

Viridian Ltd, based in Whitstable, Kent, is a company which focuses on this sensitive and expanding marketplace.

It develops biological techniques and products using the latest technology to deliver environmentally friendly processes for the treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and odour emissions from factories.

One such product manufactured at Viridian is the BioVox unit, which uses harmless microbes to break down waste solvent emissions.

Because this process is pH sensitive, Viridian has to choose its' supplier of pH equipment carefully, based on reliability and accuracy to ensure effective and continuous operation.

"Accurate testing equipment is crucial to the BioVox unit," said Richard Ambrose, principal technical consultant at Viridian.

"We placed our most recent order with Mettler Toledo, who have an excellent reputation in the marketplace.

The products we purchased benefit from low running costs because there is no need for expensive chemicals to be added to the system, just food for the microbes.

"We are very happy with both the product's monitoring performance and accuracy which has been extremely impressive.

The equipment has proven itself to be most reliable and is able to control pH closely.

"The after sales service provided by Mettler Toledo has also been excellent, with very helpful and professional staff.

Viridian can see no reason to switch suppliers in the near future." Viridian supplies the BioVox units to a variety of industries including printing and metallising companies, and recently signed a significant contract to provide R Griggs and Co, which manufacturers Dr Martins' range of footwear, with four units.

Each BioVox unit contains three component products purchased from Mettler Toledo including a pH transmitter model pH2100, a pH electrode type HA405-DXK-S8/120 and an electrode housing type InFlow 751-PVC.

These constitute a complete pH or redox measuring system offering a versatile and user-friendly application.

The transmitter is housed in a heavy-duty plastic case, which is wall mountable and easily installed and simultaneously measures pH, redox potential and temperature.

Benefits of the transmitter include a continuous sensor and transmitter diagnostics, as well as an adjustable alarm and integrated current sensor for checking peripheral equipment.

Requiring simple operation via a large LCD display, the transmitter uses pictographs to explain the main functions and to alert any irregularities in the operation with status symbols displayed for real-time monitoring.

The use of large icons and a flashing red LED ensures that any potential problem is brought to the attention of the supervising officer even in poor light conditions.

The pH electrode is virtually maintenance free as the electrolyte requires no pressurising or topping up and, with a guaranteed long service life, is well suited to operation in hostile environmental conditions which ideally complements the BioVox application.

To help achieve the highest level of operational safety, sensor and transmitter diagnostics programmes are run to confirm operational accuracy.

SensoCheck is used to constantly monitor the glass and reference electrode that will detect any failure immediately and an automatic self-test, GainCheck, runs in the background checking both the memory and the transmission of measured values at fixed intervals.

Any sensor or instrument defect is shown on the display and an alarm released.

Calibration of the sensors is achieved by the Calimatic system which analyses and identifies buffer solutions, verifies pre-set time intervals and checks tolerance parameters.

This automatic process can be changed manually for service purposes, as well as via the direct input of data from pre-calibrated sensors.

Measured values are shown after each calibration and the actual condition of the sensor verified.

"Once the system has been set up, the BioVox unit requires little maintenance and has a long operational life," said Richard. Request a free brochure from Mettler Toledo ...

"As the market continues to expand, we foresee an increased production of these 'environmentally friendly' units which play such an important part in eliminating harmful emissions from the UK's manufacturing industries.".
