Allen-Bradley PLCs a good weighing
terminal match

Fielden Automation has successfully teamed Mettler Toledo's Jaguar and Panther terminals with Allen-Bradley PLCs in the design of process equipment for customers in glass, plastics and concrete

Question - what do the following have in common: glass, plastics and concrete? Answer - all are made with the aid of Allen-Bradley's programmable logic controllers (PLCs) connected to Mettler Toledo's new generation of weighing terminals The marriage of measuring and control technologies has been brokered to good effect by leading systems integrators Fielden Automation (formerly Marshall Control Systems) of Southowram, Halifax, W Yorks, which has successfully teamed Mettler Toledo's Jaguar and Panther terminals with Allen-Bradley PLCs in the design of process equipment for customers in all three industries

The terminals have quickly proved themselves suitable for precision weighing applications in each of the different industries, even for the most hostile operating environments where vibration and airborne contamination are a constant problem.

Fielden Automation's attention was first drawn to Mettler Toledo by Rockware Glass two years ago when it was called in to advise the company on replacing an Allen-Bradley PLC 3 controlling an automatic batch process at its works in Doncaster with the latest PLC 5 model.

On Rockware's recommendation MCS decided as part of the conversion to connect the loadcells in the bulk weighing equipment to a Mettler Toledo Jaguar digital weight indicator which is approved to communicate directly with an Allen-Bradley PLC on a remote RIO interface.

MCS and Mettler Toledo worked closely with Rockware to change the hardware and software without interrupting production.

As a result, a significant increase was achieved in the throughput capacity to three furnaces, plus a saving in batch cycle times with enhanced product quality and improved control of raw materials.

Fielden Automation's sales manager David Weatherhead said that in consequence the company has since specified Jaguar terminals for batch weighing duties on behalf of a customer in the plastics industry.

Similarly, it has also selected Mettler Toledo Panther terminals for integration in a weighing system for a concrete making plant for Marshalls plc.

Both are teamed with Allen-Bradley PLCs.

"The beauty of the weighing terminals is that they link directly to an Allen-Bradley PLC for ease of connectivity," he said.

"Although we had no previous experience of Mettler Toledo's products, we were happy to follow Rockware's suggestion and found that they had a good range of terminals at reasonable prices as well as the necessary technical support and service back-up.

"It has proved a very convenient partnership and we now have no hesitation in using the terminals with Allen-Bradley PLCs for other process applications." Footnote - Mettler Toledo is involved across the entire spectrum of Rockware's manufacturing operations: from the weighing of raw materials for the batch process to quality assurance checks on end products like spirits bottles which are weighed after leaving the production lines using a battery of 15 PGS analytical balances.
