Memsic purchases land for large Chinese plant

A Memsic product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Apr 10, 2003

Memsic hopes its planned Chinese plant will allow it to slash prices while maintaining high quality.

Memsic, a provider of CMOS-based MEMS accelerometers/sensors has purchased eight acres of land in Wuxi, China for the creation of a new manufacturing facility.

The company hopes this will allow it to better meet market demand and satisfy the growing consumer market.

The new 4000m2 facility will be fully operational and qualified by ISO standards before the end of 2003.

Memsic invested $3 million in this expansion to better support its current and future customers.

The new facility will include a new Class 100 clean room for the MEMS manufacturing process and a front-end process pilot line, comprised of a packaging pilot line for low-cost and innovative packaging development and a production test line for all product testing for new product development beyond the current product lines.

The company's current manufacturing facility is ISO9001 certified and passed the ISO/TS16949 certification audit in December.

"Memsic's successful entry into the acceleration and motion sensing market greatly reduced product cost, and the sudden affordability of our innovative technology to the market stimulated rapid growth", said Memsic CEO, Dr Yang Zhao.

"Investing and expanding our manufacturing capacity indicates our long-term commitment to our customers and the market, where the demand for our stiction and particle-free MEMS construction has exploded".

Through established manufacturing partnerships in Asia with TSMC and Fujitsu, Memsic has cut operational costs by outsourcing nearly 90% of its manufacturing, resulting in products that offer the highest reliability, meet the most stringent quality standards and offer customers, in many instances, a cost saving of up to 50% on comparable technologies.

"Memsic competes strongly on our customer service and flexibility".

"In many ways, Memsic was ahead of the curve in recognising the cost value in moving our manufacturing facility to Asia; consequently, we have pulled ahead of the major semiconductor manufacturers who are currently shifting operations there", Zhao said.

Memsic technology is being used in the consumer electronics and automotive markets - among others - for virtually any application that requires the sensing of motion, acceleration, vibration or tilt.
