A major chemical company wanted to expand its pool/spa product line with a self-metering chlorinator but struggled with an uncertain design that would likely fail in operation.
A major chemical company wanted to expand its pool/spa product line with a self-metering chlorinator but struggled with an uncertain design that would likely fail in operation.
Determined to launch a new chlorinator that safely supplies a constant concentration of chlorine in time for the spring selling season, the company turned to the engineers at Meese Orbitron Dunne (MOD) of Saddle Brook, New Jersey, for its experience in manufacturing durable swimming pool products for its Pool Shot Products division.
MOD engineers quickly identified a series of plates moulded into the polyethylene walls as the culprit.
Intended to shore up the walls against high pressures up to 30lb/in2, the plates instead created multiple points of weakness that would rupture during high-pressure operation and potentially lead to a fire or explosion.
MOD redesigned the chlorinator as a one-piece unit rotationally moulded from durable polyethylene.
Delivering strength and rigidity to accommodate a 44lb/in2 water test, the MOD design eliminated the need for the leak-prone plates.
To ensure only the desired number of chlorine tablets contact the water, the MOD design included a one-piece, nesting, polyethylene tablet silo with moulded-in holes and channels that self-meter dispersion.
Dual moulded-in inserts speed integration with the filtration system while reducing the potential for leaks.
