Investment expands European pump facilities
Moog has completed the construction of a new facility for the manufacture of radial piston pumps in Nuremberg, Germany.
Moog has completed the construction of new facilities for manufacture of radial piston pumps (brand name RKP Pumps) in Nuremberg, Germany.
A further new facility has been completed for advanced product design and testing in Boblingen, Germany.
With a combined investment of Eur 12 million, the two projects constitute a major development effort for Moog's European operations.
The project has resulted in a 2400m2 extension of the Boblingen facility, including a new technology centre for the research and development of industrial hydraulics, such as pumps, servo and proportional valves, and electronic products.
Engineering and design centres for all of Moog's major industrial hydraulic product lines are now in one state-of-the-art location.
Also in Boblingen, Moog invested Eur 2 million for product development laboratories and engineering centres and Eur 5 million for technical infrastructure.
New capabilities enable functional and endurance testing for the RKP Pump.
Over 1MW of installed power is available.
In addition, a noise testing chamber was built spearate from the main building, where the sound level of pumps can be measured at different operating conditions.
The new facility in Nuremberg consists of over 5000m2 for machining, assembly, and testing of RKP pump, as well as production engineering, purchasing, and material controls functions.
Also in Nuremberg is the Moog European Distribution Centre, a 2000m2 warehouse operated by an external logistics provider.
Moog has invested more than Eur 2 million in Nuremberg, including money for two new machining centres, new finishing machines and three new test stands.
These new machines and the improved layout of the shop floor will generate efficiency improvements, resulting in short delivery times and improved customer service.
The RKP Pump is a radial piston pump design available in seven sizes between 19 and 140cm3/rev and maximum speed range from 1800 to 2900rev/min.
The standard design permits continuous pressure to 280bar with 350bar peak limit.
The high-pressure version is capable of continuous pressures up to 350bar with 420bar peak limit.
Used extensively in plastics, metal-forming and metal cutting applications, this product is well known for low noise levels, compact design and high reliability.
The RKP Pump can be operated, not only with mineral oil, but also with a wide variety of water-based fluids.
As a variable displacement pump with a variety of control options, low energy consumption, and precise control, it is commonly used in open and close loop applications.
"This investment shows our commitment to our existing customers and to developing this product to further enhance its many benefits", said Stuart Hilton, Sales Manager at Moog Controls UK.
Moog acquired the principal assets associated with the RKP Pump product line from Robert Bosch in November 2000.
Moog has continued to operate the Bosch manufacturing facility in Nuremberg and has integrated the engineering and application staff into its Boblingen facility.
This new investment completes the transition and coincides with important product developments for the RKP Pump.
